Without Loss - a setting of Rowan Williams' poem 'Bach for the Cello' - was commissioned by the Lambeth Singers in 2007. The brief was simply to set one of the Archbishop's poems in a piece suitable for liturgical use, and this one - apart from the obvious musical associations of the title - spoke to me in terms of potential for setting; the words evocative, and the structure loose enough to allow me to construct my own complementary scaffolding around it.
