Amorphic Counsel (2011) is a short piece for mixed quartet that was commissioned by Ensemble Amorpha for their 2011 performance at Gabriel Prokofiev?s nonclassical London club night. The piece has its origins in a darkly comic scene from a music theatre piece I was developing at the time, in which a distressed young woman has a therapy session with a dogmatic and unsympathetic counsellor ? in the instrumental version, the flute takes the part of the young woman, and the clarinet that of the therapist. The piece was performed a second time at the 2015 NewMusic Indaba in Bloemfontein, South Africa, with the composer conducting.
