Marinus is named after a recurring character who appears in David Mitchell's novels The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and The Bone Clocks. Marinus has the gift of re-birth. In The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, Marinus is a doctor in the Dutch trading post of Dejima in Nagasaki at the turn of the nineteenth century. He plays the harpsichord and has a particular love of Scarlatti.

Marinus was commissioned by the International Guitar Foundation and was the set piece for the 2018 London International Guitar Competition.
