The Miserere is based on the Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor from the 1st part of the “Well-Tempered Clavier” by Johann Sebastian Bach. In his choral version, Heribert Breuer transposes the original down a third and inserts words from the 51st Psalm, one of the seven penitential psalms.
The composer Heribert Breuer conducts the Berlin Bach Academy, which he founded. He is particularly known for his arrangements of instrumental pieces for diverse ensembles. His choral adaptions (e.g., also in our Choral Collection Beethoven and Bruckner. Secular Choral Music) offer a fresh perspective on the originals and are a valuable addition to the repertoire of any interested choir. The Miserere was recorded by the Calmus Ensemble for the CD “Bach for five”.
