Royal Parade is Plymouth's main street, laid out after World War 2 when most of the city centre had been reduced to rubble. The music reflects its history. The introduction suggests demolition and the gradual growth of the road. The main theme and the episodes depict the opening of the road by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, trees in blossom, a military parade, buskers in the underpass, fountains in the breeze and big royal events like the opening of the Theatre Royal by Princess Margaret and visits by Queen Elizabeth II. The piece was composed for the City of Plymouth Light Orchestra in 1982.
