The Forest (2006) was commissioned by the Scottish Clarinet Quartet and first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2008. The piece, inspired by the Ancient Caledonian Forest in Strathspey, Scotland, is a programmatic work for clarinet quartet, depicting a journey through a mysterious forest at night. Divided into five movements, the music captures the surroundings and life inside, portraying animals growling, bats fluttering, voices whispering, old church bells ringing and people screaming!
