Alongside the two cello Sonatas and the adaptation of the "Peer Gynt" Epilogue of 1993, there is one more work for violoncello and piano by Alfred Schnittke, the "Musica Nostalgica". This is a work once performed by Mstislav Rostropovich in Tokyo, the score of which was in the sole possession of the cellist until the mid-1990's.
The other work in this volume is an homage to Mstislav Rostropovich by Giya Kancheli, composed in 1997 on the occasion of the cellist's 70th birthday.
Mstislav Rostropovich is not only one of the most important cellists of the 20th century, but he has also meanwhile substantially expanded his artistic spectrum through activities in the fields of conducting and composing. The performances of Alfred Schnittke's operas "Life with an Idiot" and "Gesualdo" under his direction, for example, received a great deal of attention. Rostropovich's incomparable cello playing has inspired many contemporary composers to dedicate compositions to him. He enjoyed a close friendship with Sergei Prokofiev, whose Cello Concertos, Op. 125 and Op. 132 he premiered as soloist.
