Much of Purcell's finest music, though written for cathedral musicians, is both accessible and appropriate for modern use. Yet authentic performance often requires forces and instrumentations which, now as then, are difficult to provide locally. David Patrick has taken the bull by the horns in this imaginative selection. While remaining faithful to the spirit of the originals, he has boldly edited, transposed and pruned, as necessary, to provide a varied range of musically and textually satisfying short anthems, within the capabilities of a broad range of choirs.
