Every spring, an important musical event known as the ‘Taiwan Clinic’ is held in Taipei, Taiwan. Many internationally renowned composers, band directors and musicians are invited to the concerts, workshops and competitions for younger musicians. In 2010, Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa was invited by Canon Huang, the organiser, to be guest conductor for this event. This met with great success and further enhanced Yagisawa’s reputation in Taiwan, forging also a warm friendship between Mr. Huang and the composer.
Satoshi Yagisawa was again invited to the 7th Taiwan Clinic in 2013 along with various other prominent musicians, and was commissioned to compose a new piece based on traditional hunting songs of the Taroko people native to eastern Taiwan. The impetus came from Mr. Huang, in order to promote Taiwanese culture across the globe.
Hunting Scenes was composed with the intention of being used as a test piece for the 2013 All Chinese Wind Band Competition in Taiwan. As such, the composer proposed a cut-down version—omitting bars 109 to 145—that could easily be performed within five minutes. Both the full version (lasting some seven minutes) and the shorter version, are bound to become repertoire favourites for music lovers the world over.
