Norfolk Idyll' is evocative of the English countryside and birdsong in summer, though with a wintry bite towards the end. The piece gives an opportunity for rhapsodic expression and beauty of tone to both flute and harp. It is based on the incidental music to the famous 1972 BBC TV documentary 'The Vanishing Hedgerows', in which author Henry Williamson lamented the effects upon the Norfolk countryside of modern farming methods. The music, based on a folksong like theme and at one point quoting the 13th century song 'Summer is icumen in', sought to evoke a nostalgia for the idyllic rural landscape which was rapidly being destroyed. The work is dedicated "In memoriam Henry Williamson" and with the addition of strings forms the first movement of the composer's 'Norfolk Concerto' for flute, harp and strings. For colleges, conservatories and professionals.
