Einojuhani Rautavaara (b. 1928) wrote his Sonetto for Clarinet and Piano in 1969 for the debut concert of Finnish clarinetist Martin Fagerlund in 1970. The name “Sonetto” refers to a smallish work; the composer wanted it to be a concert piece and ‘clarinettish’, i.e. to sound as if it required a virtuoso to play it, but without containing unsurmountable technical difficulties.
