Mindscapes, written in 2001, is a work in three movements for trumpet, trombone and piano. The trumpet and the trombone are both treated as independent soloists, sometimes with overlapping or contrapuntal lines. The movement titles suggest states of mind, however there is not a strict program associated with the individual movements. The first movement, Imagination, suggests freedom with whimsical lines and rhythmic harmonies. Introspection, the second movement, maintains an almost inward methodical look at two notes of the main theme that vacillate back and forth by a half step. The triple meter of the third movement, Illumination, drives forward and builds with fanfare figures to the final measures.
