Bryan Kelly was born in Oxford in 1934. He studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London with Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob. Later, in Paris, he also studied for a short time with Nadia Boulanger. His first appointment, at the age of 23, was at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, moving later to the Royal College of Music in London where he remained for twenty years. Disillusioned with many aspects of British life he then went to live in Italy. He bought a house overlooking Lake Trasimeno in Umbria and went to Rome to teach for three days each week. At this time he was also Director of the United Nations Choir. In the early nineties he sold the Italian house and moved to a water-mill in the Dordogne region of France. He has an ongoing association with Egypt where he goes regularly to teach and conduct. His compositions cover all genres and include three concertos, two for guitar and one for oboe, Sonatinas for wind instruments and much choral music.
