Most of Paisible's music is instrumental in nature and written primarily for the theatre. The Sonata for Two Trumpets could well have been composed as music for a theatrical production, possibly also for a concert or celebration. The original title Sonata for Two Trumpets or Oboes, Two Violins, Tenor and Basses makes it clear that the solo part can be performed by either instrument. However, given that the character of the solo parts is typical of English trumpet music of the time, it should be noted that Paisible most likely conceived the composition for natural trumpet, since all the notes of the solo parts are playable on that instrument.
