Eugen Walckiers (1793 - 1866) played the old-fashioned French flute throughout his whole life, and his well-known excellent instruction book is written for that instrument. The Quartet op. 46 not only shows a wealth of ideas but also extraordinary skill as regards the diversity of settings. Enormous breath in the true sense of this word is required for such a design. Unabridged, the work's duration is 32 minutes; abridged, it would be mutilated. Complexity and simplicity, calmness and drama, theme and virtuoso transitions are in perfect balance, any change would have consequences.
