Born March 4th, 1928, Adler is a German-American composer, conductor, author, and professor. Born to a Jewish family in Mannheim, Germany, on the cusp of World War II, the Adler family fled the Nazi regime in Germany in 1939, travelling through the Netherlands to the United States. Samuel began his musical studies there, learning the violin with Albert Levy. He went on to study with well-known names like Aaron Copland, Irving Fine, Paul Hindemith, Walter Piston, and Serge Koussevitsky.
His compositional output includes three operas, six symphonies, ten string quartets, and numerous concertos, orchestral, choral, chamber, and instrumental works.

From its propulsive opening bars that evoke the great Eroica symphony, Samuel Adler's A Struggle Between Darkness and Light is a high-energy homage to the essence of Beethoven's music. Composed to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Viennese master's death in 2027, this four-minute marvel pits elegant triadic melody against anxious chromatic lines, creating a Beethovenesque musical drama in miniature form.
