Orchestra & Ensemble

Bärenreiter | Score and Parts | Violin, Cello, & Piano

Beethoven’s two piano trios were written during the composer’s visit to his patron Marie von Erdödy. Published in 1809, they are now among Beethoven’s most famous works of this genre. For this new Urtext edition, a further relevant source was at editor Jonathan Del Mar’s disposal for the first time, namely a set of parts made for Archduke Rudolf with corrections by Beethoven. By meticulously evaluating all the sources, discrepancies in previous editions were resolved and thus the third movement of Trio No. 2 is reproduced in its original five-part structure.

The special appeal of The Carnival lies in the diversity of the movements, which take a zoological look at pianists as well as numerous animals. Ultimately, it is this complexity that makes the composition particularly ingenious and entertaining. The performing edition contains a detailed Introduction and a Critical Commentary. Individual parts are also available.

Martin Campbell's swashbuckling adventure film, The Mask of Zorro captivated audiences worldwide. One of the essential elements that contributed to its success was the evocative musical score composed by James Horner. Campbell's "practical rather than CGI" approach inspired Horner to adopt a similar strategy, using a smaller orchestra with a minimum of electronics. Even with a modest ensemble, Horner created one of his most colourful, sweeping and exciting scores.

With How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, director Dean DeBlois completed his trilogy of films for DreamWorks Animation, based on the book series by Cressida Cowell. Once again, DeBlois turned to John Powell to provide the musical narration. This time, instead of relying heavily on existing music, Powell wrote a plethora of new themes, including one for the rumoured Hidden World and the vicious warlord Grimmel the Grisly.

The Matrix was an overwhelming success when it was released by Warner Bros. in 1999, praised by critics and audiences alike. The Wachowskis' main inspiration was Baudrillard's 1981 book Simulacra & Simulation. They even made the cast read it. But they also looked to films from the past, such as Total Recall, Ghost in the Shell and the works of Kurosawa. With the story and their unique visual style in place, the Wachowskis turned to collaborator Don Davis to write the music.
