Anniversary,
Charles Villiers Stanford Centenary Anniversary
Charles Villiers Stanford was one of the great choral composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Dublin in 1852, Stanford was educated at the University of Cambridge before studying music in Leipzig and Berlin. He was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music and taught composition there from 1882 until his death in 1924. His roster of students included Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Rebecca Clarke, Frank Bridge, Arthur Bliss, William Hurlstone, John Ireland, Gustav Holst, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Stanford’s compositional output mainly consisted of choral works for church performances, alongside a substantial number of concert works, and seven symphonies. He also composed nine complete operas, which are unfortunately lesser-known today.
This year marks the centenary of his death, and to celebrate the life and work of this prominent composer, several publishers have released new editions of his works, including Nine Irish Folksongs and Eight Partsongs from Stainer & Bell, the Trio in Eb major for piano violin and cello from Hoeflich, and two collections of music from RSCM: a collection of preces and responses based on themes from the works of Stanford, and a collection of Stanford works, perfect for Evensong.
