MacMillan's fourth mass setting for exclusively choral forces. Mass of St Edward the Confessor was first performed on St Peter's Day 2022, thus honouring both the patron and the founder of Westminster Abbey. Lasting 15 minutes, the work explores a wide range of moods and choral textures in response to the text and is suited to liturgical and concert performance alike.

Schott | Violin & Piano

Méditation is the second movement of the Suite concertante for violin and orchestra by Martinů. In this instrumental, standalone "aria" Martinů depicts a wide range of emotions.

The composer states that her Cello Concerto is antithetical to her other concertos: “here it’s all about the competitive tension between the soloist and the orchestra. The ‘aura’ of the cello was the initial nucleus and forms the basis of the music, so the whole structure of the piece is thus ‘carried’ by the cello." A study score of this work is also available.

Thanks to Stefano Grondona, this transcription by Tárrega of Albéniz’ Cádiz has just been identified in a manuscript copied by Miguel Llobet. This version has never been published, and is available for the first time in a new scholarly edition prepared from Llobet’s meticulously accurate manuscript, a copy of which is reproduced in the edition.

Alphonse Leduc | Flute

Anti-dogmatic and open to modernity in all its forms, in the course of his career, Jacques Ibert embraced every genre, from chamber music to symphonic and choreographic works, also composing many film scores. In 1935, his Pièce for solo flute was recorded, in its first version, by the famous flautist Marcel Moyse, who also performed it live for the first time in Prague in 1936.

This piece, written around 1900, emphasizes the purity and great sensitivity of Bonis’ work. It can be interpreted as a reflection of a difficult life spent trying to establish herself first as a student at the Paris Conservatoire, then as a housewife – through an arranged marriage – and finally as a composer. Introduction in French and English by Bruno Jouard.
