It was not just a state event of immense historical significance, it was also a major musical landmark. Twelve contemporary composers were commissioned to write new works alongside traditional Coronation music. Combined with plainsong, gospel music and the Welsh, Gaelic and Irish languages, the Coronation was a solemn and majestic occasion of unprecedented musical richness.

James O’Donnell was commissioned to arrange the offertory hymn for the Coronation service of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. His setting of Christ is Made the Sure Foundation is based on the music of Henry Purcell and features a thrilling descant, as well as varied harmonies in the last verse of the well-known hymn-tune, Westminster Abbey.

Double Choir and Organ

Coronation Sanctus by Roxanna Panufnik was commissioned by His Majesty King Charles III for The Coronation at Westminster Abbey. It is a 2-minute piece for double choir and organ described by Roxanna Panufnik as “festive and glittering”. The music quickly builds and finishes ecstatically, with organ fanfares and flamboyantly colourful harmonies.
