Camille Saint-Saëns completed the Allegro appassionato for piano on 2 May 1884 in Barcelona, Spain, as a competition piece for the piano class of the Paris Conservatory. The work, based on a solid formal structure, is at once rondo, variation, and rhythmic study, all these elements being associated with an almost omnipresent virtuosity. This edition offers a historical introduction by Edmond Lemaître and performance notes by Florence Ribot.

The score is notated for horn in C while the separate part is notated for a transposing horn in F.

With op. 192, Raff cultivated his reputation as an erudite composer who was a master of contrapuntal forms. By the time the string quartets were composed, he had already established himself as one of the most prolific and versatile suite composers of the 19th century, as is evident here in the various suite conceptions.
