Bach opened the Anna Magdalena Notebook of 1725 with two of the large Partitas subsequently published in the first part of the Clavierübung, but the rest of the contents were determined by Anna Magdalena. On the whole, these are short pieces of “galanterie”: minuets, polonaises, marches, compositions by the elder children and attempts by the younger ones, little pieces, which she copied out of the family guest book.

When he wrote his Toccata and Fugue in D minor at the age of about 20, Bach would hardly have been able to fathom what a hit he was about to land. More than 300 years later, the composition not only enjoys great popularity within his entire extensive oeuvre but can unhesitatingly be considered the most famous work in organ literature ever.
