The initial marking 'Sparkling' is a good description of this piece's effervescent Toccata-like figurations and striking harmonies. The plainsong theme appears in longer note values either in the pedal or at the top of the texture. Imaginative use of the organ creates an exciting atmosphere as the piece reaches a powerful conclusion.

These four pieces are individual works, though they can be performed together as suites of two, three or four movements where required.

Max Eschig | Guitar

Villa-Lobos went back to his Chôros No. 1 repeatedly, creating several versions along the way that were consigned to at least two different publishers. He also wrote out numerous manuscript copies of the piece, which he then gave to some of the best-known guitarists of the era, such as Andrés Segovia, Miguel Llobet and Regino Sáinz de la Maza. This is the reason why this edition, edited by Frédéric Zigante, proposes two different versions: the first, from 1928, was delivered to the guitarist Miguel Llobet, while the second, from 1957, was published by the editor Arthur Napoleão.
