This Collect (prayer) was written by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556) for the Book of Common Prayer, first published in 1549. ‘Prevent’ here means ‘go before’. The Book of Common Prayer is the foundational text of the Church of England’s doctrine and worship, as well as being a major contribution to British literature. Cranmer’s words are still used in churches and cathedrals every day.

One of Handel's 'Four Coronation Anthems', 'Zadok the Priest'. The text of the anthem has always been a part of the English Coronation Rite, but most famously since it was set to music by Georg Frideric Handel for the Coronation of George II.

Featured in the Coronation, Weelkes' anthem 'O Lord, grant the king a long life' sets verses from Psalm 61. Weelkes's music for the church, obscured by his reputation as a madrigalist, is well served by this edition of his full and verse anthems. Their qualities of dramatic strength and skill in handling choral forces are no less impressive than in his popular secular compositions.

The tune ‘Westminster Abbey’ featured in the Coronation, comes from the end of Henry Purcell’s anthem ‘O God thou art my God’. The words are well over one thousand years old but were translated in the 19th century by John Mason Neale, a Church of England priest.
