Recommended Sheet Music, Thomas Trotter: Encores for Organ

Thomas Trotter EncoresEncores have always been an element of Thomas Trotter's regular concerts in Birmingham. Now that he has reached his 40th year as City Organist, he has collated a selection of twelve varied pieces arranged for the organ.

Encompassing several nationalities and genres, the album includes piano gems by Grieg and MacDowell, orchestral favourites by Delibes and Strauss, British light music by Eric Coates, and more. These arrangements are intended for an instrument with at least three manuals. However, they have been transcribed with a finely honed sense of idiom so as to be manageable on most organs. All twelve pieces are short in length meaning they are perfect for use as recital encores, but also equally effective as programmed items in recitals of lighter works, and in some cases as church voluntaries.

Full contents include The Typewriter (Leroy Anderson), Allegro moderato (J. C. Bach), Knightsbridge March (Eric Coates), Flower Duet (Leo Delibes), Caribbean Dance (Madeleine Dring), Funeral March of a Marionette (Charles Gounod), Little Bird (Edvard Grieg), The Music Box (Anatoly Lyadov), Song (Edward MacDowell), Serenata (Moritz Moszkowski), March of the Little Lead Soldiers (Gabriel Pierne), and Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka (Johann Strauss II).

Celebration is an exciting work for solo organ. Exuberant rhythms prevail in the outer sections (including a playful reference to Walton's Crown Imperial), framing more pensive music at the centre of the piece.
