Thirty Short Preludes on the most common chorales

The Thirty Short Chorale Preludes op. 135a were first published in 1915 by Simrock. Any trace of the engraver’s manuscript owned by the publisher’s family was lost in 1929 with the disbanding of the company. It only resurfaced in 2019 in the Archive of the Prague Conservatory. It has therefore been possible to use Reger’s autograph as a second primary source in preparing this revision of the musical text of the Reger Complete Edition.

Perfect as a showpiece voluntary, Herbert Murrill's vibrant 1949 Carillon for organ is a miniature toccata that sets agile passagework above purposeful chords, with flashes of brilliance from the pedal department too. Its varied metres and busy textures propel the music to a triumphant conclusion.

This inventive work, composed in 2019, owes its title to that year's two great anniversaries connected to manned flight: the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing and the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. A range of highly effective textures and atmospheric harmonies takes us on a journey towards a gloriously affirmative D major ending.

This exciting work packs a huge amount of musical variety into its compact frame, despite being written with the needs of developing organists in mind. A fanfare-like section in 3-time twice gives way to a jaunty Allegro in 5/8, before a canonic crescendo returns us to the opening idea and a final blaze of colour.

Organ Music by Philip Moore

Via Crucis is a devotion for Passiontide, offering a ruminative resource for prayer and reflection on Christ’s death. It has a structure that is similar to the Stations of the Cross, used for many centuries. The service contains a selection of deeply felt but restrained prayers by Eric Milner-White. These are interspersed with fifteen descriptive organ pieces by Philip Moore, which act as musical responses to the words, and range from meditative to more challenging, dramatic moods. Together, the prayers and music combine to provide a beautifully fresh perspective on Lenten themes.

Written in memory of John Scott. Andrew Carter writes: "On hearing of the grievously sudden death of John Scott in New York on 12th August 2015, I was immediately moved to write Lachrimae. His was a towering genius, taken from us at the height of his powers. He possessed the twin gifts of virtuoso organist and choir trainer in equal measure..."

Sortie Héroique is a festive piece for the tuba stop but it’s playable on a two-manual organ, provided there is a good trumpet stop on the Great. It’s tuneful, of moderate difficulty and similar in character to the Paean composed in August 2019. Dedicated to Christopher Wren who was an associate of the composer on numerous cathedral visits during his time as Musical Director of the Danensian Choir and gave truly superb service as organ accompanist.

Within the extensive œuvre for organ left behind by Camillo Schumann, his six Organ Sonatas form an independent corpus. Although living and composing at a time when the music of Webern and Schönberg had long since abandoned the traditional paths of music, Camillo Schumann pursues in an astonishingly consistent manner in the tradition of the great Romantics, in particular that of Brahms and Mendelssohn. For the first time, the present anthology brings together all six Organ Sonatas in a modern Urtext edition, with editor Antje Wissemann combining philological source findings with the demands of performance practice.

The six Symphonies represent the most important group of Vierne's organ compositions. With these works he carried on the splendid French tradition of this genre bringing it to its peak. The complete edition of his organ works provides a musical text as accurate and authentic as possible: It corrects obvious misprints from the first editions, provides commentary on questionable passages and offers alternative solutions. It is based on the first editions, the composer’s manuscripts and lists of corrections from colleagues, pupils and present-day interpreters closely concerned with Vierne’s music.
