Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas are the “New Testament” of music, according to Hans von Bülow. As usual in Henle's series At the piano, all the pieces are arranged progressively from easy to medium level of difficulty. The highly Classical sonata in G major (essentially a sonatina) offers an ideal introduction to the many-facetted world of Beethoven’s sonatas. The first movement of his Moonlight Sonata in c-sharp minor, along with the funeral march from the Sonata in A-flat major are visionary creations that already point far ahead into the world of Romanticism.

Wiener Urtext

Just in time for Beethoven's 250th birthday, a previously unknown piano piece by the composer has been found in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. The work was recorded on two pages in a collection of sketches by Ludwig van Beethoven dating from the years 1790-1792. Among the multitude of different sketches, an Andante piano piece had been discovered some time ago. However, another complete little piano piece, previously overlooked, was also hidden on the first page. This newly-discovered piece does not bear a title and begins immediately following a previous sketch, making it difficult to find.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis several times as his greatest work. Beethoven worked long and intensively on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings. With this arrangement for chamber orchestra, smaller choirs, as well as choirs with more limited resources of space or finance, can now perform this work too.

“My angel, my all, my self”. With these words Beethoven, in July 1812, began his passionate love letter to a woman whose identity has eluded discovery to the present day. Was he perhaps addressing the same woman four years later when he composed An die ferne Geliebte, his song cycle on poems by Alois Jeitteles? Barry Cooper discusses this and many other questions in the introduction to his new edition of Beethoven’s only song cycle.

After the first sketches had been put to paper in 1815, Beethoven only finally put the finishing touches to his last completed symphony in 1824. With its extended finale in which soloists and choir perform, building the bridge to the symphonic cantata with their invocation of fraternity, it marks a caesura in the history of the symphony that echoed long into the nineteenth century. Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and furnished with a new preface, this edition reflects the latest in Beethoven scholarship. Symphonies 1-8 also availble here.

Between 1996 and 2000 Bärenreiter published scholarly-critical editions of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies edited by the first class musicologist Jonathan Del Mar. The editorial process was a huge undertaking because of the complex source situation regarding Beethoven's Symphonies culminating in the Choral Symphony which came in nearly twenty different sources. So it was not surprising that Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition caused a considerable stir in the music world.

Beethoven’s ten sonatas for piano and violin, along with those by Mozart, constitute the heart of this classical music genre. Following the lead of Mozart’s late sonatas, Beethoven lets the violin part become increasingly independent from the piano part. Not only does Clive Brown’s scholarly critical edition offer a meticulously edited text but for the first time it presents a list of sources and a Critical Report. Furthermore Brown documents a great number of passages where, by today’s standards, the notation raises some questions. These passages had previously been overlooked in the autograph but their significance is now clarified.
