About
Mahler did not leave any recordings to us, so this is all the more valuable, as it is the only audio document in which we can sense Mahler as a living musician, preserving as it does his pianistic style. It comprises of four of Mahler’s compositions which he recorded in Leipzig on a Welte piano in 1905. Mahler’s original Blüthner grand piano was used in this recording.

The tone is softer and pliable, rather beautiful, but the Trauermarsch sounds less dramatic. The tempi of the pieces vary alarmingly between the discs. Mahler’s playing is hardly virtuosic, indeed ludicrously slipshod at times. But it is *Mahler*.
