French jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani joins guitarist Jim Hall here at the 1986 Montreux Jazz Festival for what, in hindsight, looks like one of those collaborations that simply could not fail. With saxophone giant Wayne Shorter appearing on part of the set, the resulting live recording derives much of its appeal from the shifting relationships between the players, all built on the kind of intuitive communication that great jazz musicians seem to find without trying. From the lyrical elegance of 'In A Sentimental Mood' to the easy interplay of 'Careful' and Shorter's own 'Limbo', the performances balance technical brilliance with genuine warmth. For our money, it's one of the finest documents of Petrucciani's remarkable 80s run.
