About
When pianist and composer Camille-Alban Spreng founded Dear Uncle Lennie in 2022, it was with this wish: to investigate the evocative power of stories, without words, through the prism of brief instrumental forms. The project takes the form of a chamber trio with recurring companions guitarist Benjamin Sauzereau and banjoist Marco Giongrandi, both figures in the Brussels jazz scene.
The album is, in a way, the second season of this musical, family laboratory. With a few differences: here, long pieces, with a more complex narration, are added to the original miniatures. Thus danièle, starting with a whimsical energy before unfurling with astonishing delicacy, or the polyrthymic platoon five, gradually developing a joyful and solar trance. Some pieces are minimalist and contemplative, while others take shape in an accumulation, an interweaving of sound sources.
Musically, Sister Juniper extends the atmosphere of the first album with the desire to draw on several traditions and genres without ever settling in them. Folk songwriting rubs shoulders with minimalist and repetitive music; jazz crosses with country in a wide variety of instrumental expressions. There are many inspirations scattered around: Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Rossen or Bill Frisell to name a few. But it would be to betray the originality of the project and to bind it to the artists from whom it borrows, in that the aim is more the creation of a new folklore, freed as much as possible from all conventions.
