As the album's title indicates, this is a session made up of composition from the great American song book and jazz standards, including "Old Devil Moon" (Burton Lane), "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" (Richard Rodgers), "Grand Central Station" (John Coltrane), "Nica's Dream" (Horace Silver), and "Milestone" (Miles Davis), among others. Playingsoprano saxophone throughout,Liebman is supported by an all-star trio featuring pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Rufes Reid, and Victor Lewis on drums.

He has played and recorded with such star names as Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and McCoy Tyner. As a leader he has recorded over 250 albums in styles ranging from classical to rock to free jazz.
