Other Worlds, the new studio album from saxophonist Joe Lovano and trumpeter Dave Douglass Sound Prints quintet was recorded following a week at New York's Village Vanguard in January 2020. Their third full length release, this further nod to jazz visionary Wayne Shorter features boisterous and playful originals as well as a couple of beautiful ballads. The rhythm section features the powerful multi-generational lineup of pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Joey Baron, who continue to provide a fluid and firm footing for the two horn players. The album artwork features a unique illustrated cover by cartoonist Dave Chisholm.

In the best way on Other Worlds, it's easy to lose yourself and get pulled into Sound Prints' interstellar sparring.

Lovano’s “Space Exploration” opens with a mystic fanfare and glides into abstractions before settling into compact swing – an approach reminiscent of Shorter’s mid-1960s Blue Note joints like The All Seeing Eye – while “The Flight” suggests the mutant blues of Miles’s take on “Freedom Jazz Dance” stretched even further out of shape. Recorded off the back of a weeklong run at the Village Vanguard, the album bristles with authority.

Sound Prints’ music may reference the classic freecollective innovations of Shorter, Ornette, and the mid-60s Miles quintet, but their audaciously sophisticated refinement of all that rich history makes them a truly contemporary jazz band.

Unlike Sound Prints’ previous two albums, the new recording showcases all originals. Still, Shorter’s musical DNA is noticeable throughout, especially in the album’s stargazing theme, in its philosophical undertow and in the mutable dialogue and spatial awareness conveyed by the quintet.
