We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: we will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.

These words were spoken by Her Majesty the Queen when this month she addressed a nation dealing with the privations imposed by the current Coronavirus outbreak. In echoing We'll Meet Again they hark back, of course, to the timeless Vera Lynn recording that conjures thoughts of wartime and struggle in us all; young or old. Now that song and many others that stirred both pride and resolution are to be released as Victory Songs That Won The War on 8 May 2020 by Hindsight Records. Dame Vera Lynn herself said recently, Music is so good for the soul, and during these hard times we must all help each other to find moments of joy. Keep smiling and keep singing.

That release date in itself is auspicious, as the early May bank holiday this year has been moved from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. This is only the second time ever that the early May bank holiday has been moved the first was in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary. Even as we deal with the current emergency, and salute the dedication of our incredible NHS, we must still take the time to honour the incredible sacrifice men and women made during the Second World War.
