Jacques Gauthé was a French jazz clarinettist and sax player. He studied under Claude Luter and Sidney Bechet and formed his own band in 1957. In 1972, he relocated to New Orleans, where he played at Preservation Hall.
The music on this CD was recorded in Denmark in 1990 and has three reed players and no brass, so the pace is fast and thrilling! What a line-up! Peter Nissen leads the session from the drums, with Jacques on clarinet and soprano sax, Soren Sorensen on tenor sax and vocals, Leif Madsen on clarinet and alto sax, Doc Houlind at the piano, Henrk Stiigvad on banjo and Arne Sorensen on string bass.
Jacques Gauthé was without doubt one of the happiest jazzers ever and wonderful player with a superb sound. This super CD is a tribute to him and one not to be missed.
