Pictures Of Soul is an improvised music collaboration between Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and Los Angeles-based percussionist Adam Rudolph. These two creative musicians enjoyed each other's work at a distance for several years, both sharing an appreciation of ritual trance music - that is, music that leads us into an altered state of consciousness. Entirely improvised in the studio, without rehearsal or charts, this record is an example of what happens when two highly creative musicians meet and hit it off straight away, and the energy of the performances shines through. Sosa's rhythmic piano style perfectly complements the battery of percussion played by Rudolph (whose background includes stints with Don Cherry and Yusef Lateef), and the music is an exhilarating ride through a variety of styles.
