Presenting Magic Drum Orchestra’s limited edition double A-side 7” of “Original Nuttah feat. Bunty/Dread Nourishment”. Featuring a captivating rework of the ragga-jungle classic “Original Nuttah” alongside the dub-infused rhythms of “Dread Nourishment”, this release presents a glimpse into the genre-spanning array of influences on offer in this thrilling new project.
Following a three year break, founding Magic Drum Orchestra member Glyn “Bigga” Bush is back with a fresh take on MDO’s infectious attention-grabbing beats. Built around the rule that every note had to come from a percussion instrument, Glyn explores the core instrumental components of the Magic Drum Orchestra in a studio setting. The result is an instinctive, beat-laden album inspired by hip hop, grime, GQOM and R&B production and traditional samba rhythms and styles.
“Original Nuttah feat. Bunty” is an irresistible, dance-filled percussive cover that’s bound for the same success as MDO’s memorable hits like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Sunshine of your Love”. Glyn finds innovative ways to give new life to Shy FX & UK Apachi’s ragga jungle classic; the high pitched drone of the original is re-created on a singing bowl; the iconic bass-line is transferred to Brazilian bass-drums called “surdos” and the jungle breaks are reproduced on live drums. Bunty’s playful vocals lighten and feminise the rude boy anthem, injecting what Glyn calls: “new life and vibes into a classic of the genre”.
Glyn’s back catalogue includes the notable house, dub and trip-hop band Rockers Hi-Fi who released albums on Island and Warner and gained a substantial following with fans including Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation and Jason Bentley (KCRW radio, LA). More recently, following Rockers Hi-Fi’s success, Glyn began concentrating on his own productions, remixing tracks for the likes of Swayzak, Mark Rae, Fat Freddy’s DJ Fitchie; collaborating with Fela Kuti’s drummer, the great Tony Allen to create the 2008 album ‘13 Faces of Lightning Head’.
