About
Inspired by a trip to Greece, trumpeter and composer Jack Walrath's 'To Hellas and Back', showcases his continuing devotion to lyricism and his strong projection on a wide emotional spectrum. Walrath has been acclaimed by All About Jazz for "his tremendous trumpet playing, a rich and varied approach to composition and his wonderful band" as well as "something that's missing from too much new jazz: a sense of fun and humour."
Walrath is best-known for his work with Charles Mingus in the 1970s when he acted, effectively as MD on Mingus' final projects. His crackling post-bop trumpet made telling contributions to Mingus' later works and after the bassist's death he led the Mingus Dynasty Group and played a prominent role in the Mingus Big Band.
Personnel: Jack Walrath (trumpet), Abraham Burton (tenor saxophone), George Burton (piano), Boris Kozlov (bass), Donald Edwards (drums)
