Trogon, named after the national bird of Cuba, is the vibrant new Latin-infused sextet led by London-based trumpeter Nick Smart. It's an ensemble that makes full use of the breathtaking cultural breadth of London's rich musical landscape, employing a truly cosmopolitan line-up of cutting-edge players with deep international connections. Call it World Jazz, if you like. Alongside outstanding young jazz-rock guitarist Chris Montague, and firebrand drummer Dave Hamblett, the group also includes London-Bangladeshi pianist Kishon Khan, Cuban bassist Denny 'Jimmy' Martinez, and long established London Latin-jazz percussionist Pete Eckford. This eclectic mix of musical backgrounds and aesthetic obsessions is enriched and enlivened by the propulsive rhythmic traditions of Afro Cuban music and the rich harmonic possibilities of contemporary jazz.
