About

Singer and pianist Karrin Allyson is a mainstay for Concord Jazz, recording a dozen albums for the label over the past 20 years. Her previous two releases, 'Footprints' and 'Imagina: Songs of Brazil' both garnered Grammy nominations for Best Jazz vocal album.

'Round Midnight' is a collection of 11 songs with a late-night ballad feel, many dealing with the topic of heartbreak. Included are Bill Evans' "Turn Out the Stars", Paul Simon's "April Come She Will", Charlie Chaplin's "Smile", Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady", Steven Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" and of course the title track "Round Midnight", by Thelonious Monk. For the first time in her career Karrin, plays all the piano and keyboard parts on the album. In fact, for "There's No Such Thing As Love" she performs solo and on "Round Midnight" she is accompanied only by the bass. The core band throughout the CD is comprised of Rod Fleeman on guitar, Ed Howard on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. Bob Sheppard plays saxophone, flute and clarinet throughout the album.
