About

The tenor saxophonist Odean Pope, who has been described by The Guardian as a "hybrid of Sonny Rollins, Joe Lovano and Evan Parker," is still bursting with creativity at the age of 73. 'Odean's Three' recorded with master drummer Billy Hart and bassist Lee Smith reveals Odean's fresh, almost youthful touch.

Tenor saxophonist Odean Pope is a product of the dynamic Philadelphia jazz scene of the 1950's and shared the stage with John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith and iconic drummer Max Roach, who's band he was a key member of for two decades. Pope, who is also a master of clarinet, oboe, flute, piccolo and piano, performs with a variety of ensembles ranging from trios and quartets to an all-star ensemble, with James Carter, Terell Stafford and Jeff "Tain" Watts, amongst others.

The album includes eight original compositions from Odean, with "Blues It", being composed by Pope's long time Philadelphia companion, Hassan Ibn Ali - the semi-mythical pianist who played in the sixties with Max Roach and was only heard on one single LP.

Personnel: Odean Pope (tenor saxophone), Lee Smith (bass), Billy Hart (drums)
