World & World Jazz
World jazz, sometimes referred to as ‘ethno jazz’, is a broad term to describe jazz music that incorporates elements of non-Western traditional and folk music. Much like world music itself, it is often used to refer to styles of music considered ‘exotic’ to European and North American listeners; the term ‘world music’ originated in the 1980s as a way to market non-Western traditional music in these regions. Examples of world jazz include Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz, jazz that utilises Middle-Eastern instrumentation, or Balkan folk-jazz.
