German oboist Albrecht Mayer was born in Erlangen in 1965 and was a boy chorister at Bamberg Cathedral, beginning oboe lessons aged ten; he also began his orchestral career in Bamberg (where he was appointed principal of the Bamberger Symphoniker in 1990), before taking up the principal chair at the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1992.

Mayer also records regularly as a soloist and chamber musician; his solo discography includes Lost and Found (a collection of rare eighteenth-century oboe concertos with Kammerakademie Potsdam), Long for Paradise (works for oboe and orchestra by Elgar, Goossens, Ravel and Strauss), the Opus Klassik Award-winning Tesori d’Italia, and In Venice (‘Mayer’s sweet, rounded tone, wide range of dynamics and impeccable articulation are a constant delight’ – BBC Music Magazine). He has also made recordings with The King’s Singers, Nigel Kennedy, and his Berlin colleague the flautist Emmanuel Pahud.
