Born in Dorset in 1977, Clein began learning the cello aged six; she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition in 1994 with the Elgar Cello Concerto, a piece which also brought her victory in the first-ever Eurovision Competition for Young Musicians (she subsequently recorded the concerto with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Vernon Handley on Warner Classics, winning praise from The Independent for her ‘rich, burnished voice’). Her discography also includes the Kodály Cello Sonata with Julius Drake, an album of solo works by Bloch, Ligeti and Dallapiccola, Saint-Saëns’s first two cello concertos with Andrew Manze and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Bloch’s Schelomo and Bruch’s Kol Nidrei with the BBCSSO and Ilan Volkov, all on Hyperion.
