A diverse collection this week, starting with vocalist and saxophonist Sandra-Mae Lux returning to the familiar sounds of the Great American Songbook in Seasons In Jazz, a collection of brand new standards that explore the nature of love through the changing seasons. As saxophonist Cecilie Strange reflects on motherhood, her album Beech uses explorative improvisation to craft introspective pieces that embrace the complicated emotions attached to the cycle of life, and multi-talented musician Brad Turner showcases his piano skills in It’s All So. Drummer Jamie Eblen and guitarist Mike Bono fuse elements of jazz, production and rock together in TINO CAMINO, and drummer, composer and arranger Mathieu Clement returns with his ensemble in tow (and an extra saxophone this time around) for their second album Ruma.
In a new direction from her disco-sounding debut, Sandra-Mae Lux returns to her roots with Seasons in Jazz. A heartfelt homage to the Great American Songbook, Sandra-Mae and song-writing partner Alan Marriott present eleven original tracks that cover bossa novas to ballads, creating fresh, new standards. Trumpeter, pianist, drummer, composer - all titles that talented musician Brad Turner bears. In his latest album with Cellar Live, Turner looks to the piano to perform nine original pieces – eight of which are composed by Turner himself. Luxembourg drummer, composer, and arranger Mathieu Clement presents his second album leading his own band. Developing the ensemble’s sound by expanding to include the addition of another saxophone, Clement embraces the compositional challenge of writing for three and four-part horn arrangements. The result is a dynamic sextet sound that highlights his love for combining wind instruments together and intricate, expressive writing.
