New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 7th October 2021

roundup

The latest jazz releases of the week include Enrico Rava and Craig Taborn on ECM, Nordic folk and atmospheric pedal steel sounds from Hubro and American vocalist Kurt Elling’s funk-inspired SuperBlue.

Enrico Rava

Recorded live at the 2019 Middelheim Festival in Antwerp, Italian flugelhornist Enrico Rava’s latest album features a group of young improvisers - Rava being known as something of a mentor for the young generation of Italian jazz players - covering material from Rava’s earliest recordings like 1978’s Enrico Rava Quartet, right up to 2015’s Wild Dance.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Craig Taborn

Over a decade since his solo piano album Avenging Angel - also released on ECM - American jazz pianist Craig Taborn’s latest album Shadow Plays was recorded in early March 2020 as another solo concert; a decade more refined in his approach, Shadow Plays is a totally improvised set of diverse music.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Nils Økland

Bringing together a band of past collaborators - though having them all play together in the same room is a new one for Nils Økland - Glødetrådar (’Filaments’) sees the Spellemannprisen-winning fiddle player exploring Nordic folk in a small chamber format after a history of working with many large orchestras.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC

Geir Sundstøl

An homage to a now long-gone steelworks near Oslo, guitarist Geir Sundstøl’s St. Hanshaugen Steel is a pedal steel guitar-led record dripping with rustic atmosphere. Sundstøl is also accompanied by Arve Henriksen, who offers his gentle trumpet tones on the opening track ‘Våg’.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Kurt Elling

A sharp pivot away from 2020’s Grammy Award-winning Secrets Are the Best Stories, American vocalist Kurt Elling’s latest album SuperBlue is filled to the brim with funk-inspired material. Elling offers not only original compositions, but also his own takes on tunes by Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard. Elling is joined by members of hip-hop group Butcher Brown, drummer Corey Fonville and bassist/keyboardist DJ Harrison, as well as hybrid-guitar player Charlie Hunter, who also co-produced the record alongside Elling.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Joined by his quartet of Wetle Holte, Erland Dahlen and Audun Erlien, electric guitarist Eivind Aarset’s latest record builds on his established sound of pseudo-ambient jazz music and heavily manipulated electric guitar.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Itaru Oki Quartet

From Lithuanian record label NoBusiness - the same folks behind the Sam Rivers archive series - comes this reissue from Japanese trumpeter Itaru Oki. A live recording from Jazz Spot Combo in Fukuoka, Japan, the improvised set was originally recorded straight to cassette, and this reissue comes complete with a photo booklet and liner notes.
