P.E. Lange-Mller (18501926) thought little of what he had made. He shrank from the honours his country pressed upon him but Denmark heard it otherwise. Largely self-taught, a melodist by instinct, he set his tunes to a harmony no one had taught him, and across half a century he wrote more than two hundred songs that were sung and played in Danish homes as no others were. In this 6-CD set, the successor to Dacapos Peter Heise: The Song Edition, Christian Westergaard and thirteen of Denmarks finest singers bring the heart of that work together for the first time. Not the failure he believed himself to be, but one of Denmarks best-loved composers, heard whole.
