When Zubin Mehta, who served as General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper from 1988 to 2006, returned to the podium of the National Theatre in Munich the year after his departure, he included this work in the programme a decision that proved to be a stroke of genius. The bond that had grown over the years between the great conductor and the top-tier Munich ensemble based on breathing together and listening to one another provided the ideal foundation for The Rite of Spring: from the harmony of collaborative music-making emerged an explosive interpretation of this radical music.
