About

Once established in London, Handel devised a new kind of music drama that won over the English public and gave the operatic stage a new, modern aspect. Revolutionizing English traditions, he imported the drama and colour of Italy, and the voices of its greatest operatic castrati. Carlo Vistoli now presents this heritage, reviving some of the greatest Handel arias first sung in London by his illustrious compatriots.

October 2026

Vistoli gives an outstanding performance of the ten arias on the album allotted to castrato singers...Le Concert d'Astrée, under their conductor and founder Emmanuelle Haïm, give committed and incisive support.

October 2026

the standout moments of this programme are, perhaps unsurprisingly, when Vistoli sings in Italian...Vistoli's already radiant voice blooms further with wider, richer vowels and a generous ease to his lyrical phrasing.

September 2026

This gorgeous album is a fascinating reminder of how much inspiration Handel drew from the star castrati of the day, particularly Senesino, Guadagni and Carestini. With idiomatic, unmannered English diction, bags of temperament and a rich palette of vocal colours at his disposal, Vistoli is a constant pleasure - 'The Raptur'd Soul' from Theodora in particular is heart-stopping stuff.
