The standout item here is George Walker's three movement Cello Sonata from 1957. It's a powerful, deeply expressive and tautly argued work that mixes elements of modernism and romanticism, while at the same time containing some allusions to jazz. Performed here with total conviction by Woods and Hanick, the sonata deserves much wider dissemination and will hopefully establish a secure place in the repertoire.

Woods is best known for his advocacy of new and neglected music, so it's a treat to hear him in the familiar territory of the Rachmaninov Sonata. He's joined here by his longtime touring partner Andrew Rosenblum, who maintains a velvety tone no matter how busy the texture.
