About
A live recording at the last stop, Helsinki, of Evgeny Mravinsky's 1961 Scandinavian tour with his Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. The programme includes Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 (of which unfortunately only movements 2-4 were recorded), Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, and two encores: Grieg's Solveig Song, and Lyadov's Baba-Yaga. This is a legendary world premiere recording never heard before and unearthed by Janus Classics and the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE together, capturing a transformative stage of the career of Mravinsky and in particular his relationship with the two most important symphonies to him. As always, Janus Classics employed state-of-the-art 32-bit spectral remastering technology to ensure the best listening experience. The extensive booklet includes a detailed comparison of multiple recordings of Shostakovich's 5th by Mravinsky and notes on the remastering process, with photos rarely seen before.
